Sweden home to first mall for secondhand goods 

ESKILSTUNA, Sweden  (July 20): A mall selling second hand items in Eskilstuna, Sweden has been drawing about 300,000 visitors every year since it opened in 2015. The mall called  ReTuna is located an hour’s train ride west of Stockholm. It consists of 13 stores and covers 5,000 sq m.

According to an AFP report,  ReTuna has been named “the world’s first shopping mall designated for repaired, recycled and restored items” by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2020. Some of the used items sold are tech gadgets, books, children’s toys, furniture, clothes, sports goods and building materials. 

Eskilstuna was transformed into an ecological city in the 1990s. The city’s mayor Jimmy Jansson told AFP that the city leaders are now trying to develop it into a modern industrial town.

“We are traditionally an industrial town, we have had our difficulties and we thought we have to find some things that can build confidence and where we can take responsibility,” Jansson said.

Sweden is aiming to be an ecological leader by becoming carbon neutral by 2045.
